Why Families Love Ouray
Ouray is a small town — about 1,000 permanent residents — with a layout that's genuinely easy to navigate with kids. Main Street is a few blocks long. The hot springs pool has a waterslide and children's areas. The Box Canyon Falls boardwalk is accessible for all ages and fitness levels. The town is surrounded by mountains but doesn't require technical hiking to see dramatic scenery.
There's no massive resort infrastructure, no gambling, no crowded theme parks. What Ouray offers families is something harder to find: a real Colorado mountain town where kids can be outside, where wildlife is close, and where the pace of the day is set by the mountains rather than a schedule. Multiple guests have described it as one of the rare places where every member of a multigenerational family finds something they love.
Family Activities in and Around Ouray
Ouray Hot Springs Pool — The centerpiece of any family visit. Multiple pool zones from lap swimming to soaking pools, a waterslide, and a zero-depth kids' area. Open year-round. Admission is per person and very reasonable.
Box Canyon Falls — A 285-foot waterfall in a narrow canyon, reached by boardwalk and viewing platforms. Short walk from the center of town. Dramatic and accessible. One of the most memorable free experiences in the San Juans.
Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour — A guided underground mine tour that goes deep into an active historic gold and silver mine. One of the best family activities in the region — fascinating for kids and adults. Reservation recommended.
Jeep tours — Guided 4WD tours are available in town for families who want mountain access without driving themselves. Tours go to alpine meadows, waterfalls, and wildflower fields at various difficulty levels.
Lower Cascade Falls Trail — An easy half-mile walk to a waterfall that most kids can do comfortably. One of several accessible trails that start at the edge of town.
Why a Condo Beats a Hotel for Families
A full kitchen makes a significant financial difference on a family trip. Breakfast and lunch at home, groceries from the Ouray City Market, one restaurant dinner per night — families typically save $100–200 per day compared to eating all meals out. Over a five-day trip that's $500–1,000 in food savings that more than offsets the condo cost difference.
The in-unit washer and dryer means you can pack lighter and not worry about muddy hike clothes or wet swimsuits. Two separate bedrooms give parents and kids their own space. And the dog-friendly policy means the family dog can come along rather than being boarded.
Multigenerational Groups
Extended family groups often book two or three Lumberyard condos simultaneously. The three ground-floor units — The Crawler, The Nordic, and The Ice Axe — sit side by side with a shared courtyard and outdoor grill. Grandparents can stay in one unit while parents and kids take the others. The shared outdoor space creates a natural communal area without forcing everyone into the same room.
