Ouray and Its Hot Springs

Ouray, Colorado earns its nickname — "The Switzerland of America" — from the sheer walls of the Uncompahgre Gorge that ring the town on three sides. The same geology that carved those walls also delivers geothermal water that has fed Ouray's hot springs for thousands of years. The Ute people soaked here long before the town existed. Today, the Ouray Hot Springs Pool is one of the largest and best-maintained hot springs facilities in Colorado.

The main pool complex sits at the north end of town and features multiple temperature zones — from a cool lap pool to soaking pools holding steady at 106°F — plus a waterslide and children's play areas. Admission is open to the public year-round, and the evening soak after a day of hiking or ice climbing is one of the defining experiences of an Ouray trip.

Why Winter Is the Best Time for the Hot Springs

Soaking in 104°F water while snowflakes fall on your shoulders and canyon walls rise 400 feet on either side is one of the most memorable things you can do in Colorado. The contrast between the frigid air and steaming water, the quiet of a winter evening in Ouray, and the dramatic landscape make a winter hot springs trip something people talk about for years.

The Lumberyard is particularly suited to a hot springs winter trip. Walk to the pools in 10 minutes, soak until you're ready to melt, walk back, and warm up further by the gas fireplace (available in 4 of 5 units). Every unit also has a full kitchen so you can make dinner at home rather than heading back out into the cold — a small luxury that makes a big difference.

Box Canyon and the Natural Hot Spring Trail

Box Canyon Falls is a short walk from the center of Ouray — a 285-foot waterfall thundering through a narrow canyon accessible via boardwalk and viewing platforms. The Box Canyon area also has natural hot spring seeps along the creek trail, a more rustic alternative to the main pool complex. The trail is accessible year-round and is a short walk from The Lumberyard.

Planning Your Ouray Hot Springs Trip

Ouray is a 35-minute drive from Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which has direct flights from Denver and other hubs. The Million Dollar Highway — US 550 — connects Ouray to Silverton and Durango to the south and to Ridgway and Montrose to the north. Driving into Ouray is part of the experience: the road enters a narrow canyon with cliff walls rising on both sides before the valley opens up into the town.

Summer and early fall bring the most visitors, but the Ouray Hot Springs Pool is genuinely best enjoyed in the shoulder seasons — late October through November and March through April — when the crowds are thinner and the combination of cool air and warm water is ideal. Any of the five Lumberyard condos work well for a pool-focused trip. Note: the condo unit named "The Hot Springs Suite" is named for the pools but is a separate thing — it's the top-floor condo with mountain views and a private deck, not the pool itself. If views and a deck are priorities, it and The Amphitheater are the two upper-floor units.
